The "Average" rating used to sort hospices is not a number provided by Medicare. Instead, it is calculated by combining all of the other results. For the care metrics, the raw Medicare data is used. For the survey questions, where there are generally three possible answers, which could generally be considered "Exceptional," "Acceptable," and "Poor," the "Exceptional" is added to 1/2 of the "Acceptable" score, and that resulting number is used. Each of those numbers is added together, and divided by the total number of scores, to come up with an average score.

If a hospice does not have a score for any of the possible sections, then no average is calculated, so as not to show an artificially low average score.

The City and State must both be entered to perform a search.

When a state is selected, the city name must also be entered.

When performing a search, don't enter the city AND the zip code.

Enter EITHER the zip code OR the City and State.
